Panties though often hidden under clothes are our most intimate friends. Here are some ten facts you probably didn’t know about these delicate linens who hug us in the most sacred of places.
Origin of the word drawers
Ever wondered why panties are also called drawers? The term was originally derived from the French word 'tirer" which means to pull down. Hence panties are called drawers because we are generally expected at some point to pull them down. How often do you pull down your panties ;)
The word 'lingerie' in France is gender neutral. This implies that both women and men underwear are referred to as lingerie. Imagine buying men's lingerie.
Effect of panties on confidence level
Generally, putting on a fresh and properly fitting panty or knicker bolsters a person's confidence level, whereas not so fitting or repeated underwear could put quite the cloud over a person's mood. So next time your co-worker comes to work looking so confident, he might just have gotten the right fit of fresh undies.
Panties and good luck
Italian women have a long standing tradition of putting on red panties during New Year celebrations. If you are in Italy around New Year, you could make a quick buck by selling creative red underwear as even men are increasingly getting in on the action. However, sexual promiscuities have been known to be at its peak during this period.
Jail time for exposed knickers
Algi T. Howels in 2005 tabled a bill at the Virginia house of delegates which proposed a $50 fine for those whose underwear were exposed from under their pants. Unfortunately for her and fortunately for some of us, her bill got kicked out. Can you imagine being pulled over and taken downtown because of your underwear?
The most expensive underwear
The record for the most expensive knicker is held by a pair of Queen Victoria's underwear. The pair of knickers was sold at auction in Edinburgh for $14,500. The underwear is made of white cream fabric and has the Victoria Regina (VR) insignia on it. What a fortune!
Origin of the word 'commando'
Going commando refers to dressing without a pant or knicker underneath. The word commando is believed to have originated from the military, were trainees and service men seldom wore underwear. This was because during military training exercises which often occurred in wet conditions, putting on knickers or panties could lead to infections around the groin and anal area. After training, some of these servicemen and women were already too use to going without panties that they stuck to it.
Panties and your sex drive
People who feel comfortable in their underwear feel more comfortable engaging in sexual activities that those who do not feel comfortable in their panties. It is also generally held that women who put on G-strings are generally more open to different options in the bedroom.
How often women go commando
A research in America showed that one in ten (10%) American women go without panties at least once in year. Surprising right? You can now come out of the closet.
The underwear industry and extinction
The early manufactures of corsets used the bones of whales to enforce its sturdy shape. This almost led to the extinction of the baleen whale.
